Festival Diary 2010
The 2010 Glenavy festival featured a range of well-attended and popular events for people of all ages. You can read about the events here in our Festival Diary. Photographs of festival events and participants were taken by Adrian Young, a member of the GDP Committee. Saturday 19 June

The 2010 Festival Week for Glenavy was launched with our Family Fun Day on Saturday 19 June. This year it was bigger and better than ever, with a day of glorious sunshine to match. Activities were available in the form of rodeo bull, assault course, boxing and sumo wrestling along with the ubiquitous bouncy castles.
With barbeque available and an archery competition to test our skills, the fun factor was high. The day was complete with the duck race in Glenavy River. |
Sunday 20 June
The trip to Rams Island has established itself as a regular fearture for the Festival Week. On Sunday 20th the demand was so great that the boat had to make two trips to take around 40 visitors across Louch Neagh to Rams Island. Again the sun shone for all and another successful trip, with barbeque, was completed.
Monday 21 June
On Monday night it was still very hot when Glenavy faced the challenge of the annual 3 and 4 mile Fun run. Runners (and walkers) of all ages and abilities joined together to complete the course. when they completed the course all were provided with a well-earned bottle of water for refreshment. Once each runner had got their breath back, they were presented with a medal to mark their endeavours. Congratulations to all who took part. Tuesday 22 June
Two quizzes featured during Festival Week. On the Tuesday night a young people's quiz was arranged by the GDP Youth Committee who play an active part in organising and contributing to a range of events during festival week.

While the rest of the world enjoyed the FIFA World Cup in South Africa, here in Glenavy our attendtion was focussed on the Glenavy World Cup. Our five- a-side competition took place on took place on the Wednesday night and gave the citizens of Glenavy of all ages the opportunity to display their prodigeous talent at football.
Or they could just take part for the fun of it.
The event was very well subscribed and proved so successful that matches continued even as the sun set. Congratulations to all the winning teams and well done to all participants for showing we can play, as well as watch, the beautiful game. |
Thursday 24 June
| On Thursday there was a further quiz held in Lily Johnstons.
The events was well attended and tightly fought through several rounds whre the leading team continually changed. In the end there was just one point seperating first, second and third. All members of the winning teams received prizes. There was also a raffle held which raised funding for festival events. Thanks to Lily Johnstons for hosting the event and for the food provided. |

Friday 25 June
This week of both new and familiar events culminate in a Fancy Dress parade on Friday 25th. Prizes were awarded for the most origonal, most humerous and the most pretty or handsome participants. Master and Miss Glenavy were also apppointed. Thanks to the Lord Mayor of Lisburn, Alderman Paul Porter, for judging the competition.
Following the parade through Glenavy, all assembled at the Glenadian centre for a community barbeque. You can view the winners in their splendid costumes.
Saturday 26 June
The closure of Festival Week for 2010 was marked with the Senior Citizens trip on Saturday 26th June to the Maritime Festival at Bangor, Co. Down. Thirty-eight people left Glenavy behind for the day and caught the coach to Bangor. The trip included a meal at Cultra, Holywood.
